A mother is accused of exploiting the tragic death of her 24-year-old daughter by demanding compensation from her daughter’s former employer so she could buy a house for her son. In October 2020, the daughter, identified as Luoluo in media reports, drowned after falling into a river. Extending their condolences, Luoluo’s employers offered her parents 60,000 yuan (US$8,823.5). However, the parents demanded 410,000 yuan (US$60,294.1). After reading Luoluo’s posts on Sina Weibo, a supervisor at the company learned that Luoluo often felt neglected by her family, and her parents only called her to ask for money. Luoluo also long suffered from depression and had considered suicide, her posts revealed. Social media users were further incensed after a posted video showed Luoluo’s mother appeared excited about Luoluo’s death and the prospect of receiving compensation. Many netizens called for the company to get the police involved.
