Air China and China Southern Airlines took delivery of their first C919 plane on August 28, marking another milestone in multi-user operations for China’s first domestically developed passenger aircraft.
China’s three biggest airlines now all include the C919 in their fleet. Air China’s C919 is an extended range aircraft with eight business seats and 150 in economy, while China Southern Airline’s C919 is a standard aircraft with eight business seats and 156 in economy. Both planes have customized equipment.
Developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) since 2007, the C919 made its maiden flight in 2017 and obtained approval from the China Civil Aviation Administration in September 2022. Three months later, COMAC delivered a C919 to its first domestic user, China Eastern Airlines, which is C919’s biggest customer globally.
The C919 is operated on five regular routes and has been in use for 15 months with no issues. According to media reports, COMAC has received over 1,400 C919 orders worldwide.
