The ongoing exhibition “On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt” has been showcasing Egypt’s rich history, religion, culture and art through 788 artifacts displayed at the Shanghai Museum since July 19. With 95 percent of the items exhibited for the first time in Asia, the exhibition provides a unique glimpse into the Mediterranean’s earliest unified state, formed around 3000 BCE along the Nile River during the Bronze Age. At that time, the Yellow River civilization in China was still in the Neolithic period. The exhibition features Pharaonic sculptures, mummies, papyrus scrolls and hieroglyphic carvings, illustrating Egypt’s unique fusion of divination and secular power. Divided into three sections, the exhibition, running until August 17, 2025, also highlights the contributions of Chinese archaeologists in Egypt since 2018.
