Domestic Violence Against Rural Women Persists

Fangyuan Magazine April 15, 2024

By NewsChina Updated Aug.1

Despite eight years of implementation of anti-domestic violence (DV) laws in China, the plight of rural women remains severely underrepresented in statistics and surveys. Hindered by a deeply ingrained patriarchal society that denies them job opportunities and equal rights to inherit family assets, many uneducated women endure abuse from their husbands while toiling in kitchens and farmlands. Fearful of retaliation, these women often remain silent and distrustful of legal protections such as police warnings or court-issued protective orders. Recovery for these traumatized women, who have endured unimaginable brutality, will be a prolonged process. It is imperative for local courts, prosecutors and women’s federations to heighten awareness and provide precise support in legal, economic and compassionate realms to shield these vulnerable women from continued harassment and abuse. Only through concerted efforts can these women begin to heal from the scars of domestic violence.
