Flying Cars to Lift Off Domestic Economy

China is embarking on an ambitious endeavor to develop low-altitude air traffic, aiming to cultivate a new economic frontier beyond land properties. This vision, articulated for the first time in this year’s Government Work Report, anticipates a robust low-altitude economy reaching 200 billion yuan (US$27.6b) by 2030, with tourism serving as a primary driver. Central to this initiative is the adoption of Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, showcased in successful trial operations between Shenzhen and Zhuhai, Guangdong Province earlier this year. Shenzhen, at the forefront of this development, has attracted major eVTOL producers like Ehang and Lilium. However, further advancements in aviation lithium batteries and propulsion systems are necessary to meet rigorous safety standards, ensuring eVTOLs transition from sightseeing novelties to practical air shuttles.
