Move over power suits and pumps, “ugly outfits” are what young professionals are wearing to work.  

In a social media trend that started since China’s clockwatchers resumed work after Spring Festival, many are comparing their most unappealing work outfits on platforms such as Douyin (China’s TikTok), where the hashtag “disgusting outfits for work” amassed over 500 million views.  

Many netizens said they would forgo spending time on putting together outfits for more time to rest, especially considering their time-consuming commutes. Some vented that wearing elaborate makeup and fashionable clothes at work is not only unnecessary, but also may attract unwanted attention that could lead to feelings of embarrassment and discomfort.  

Media analysts suggested that lengthy commutes are among the reasons driving the trend. They also pointed out that young people turning to “ugly outfits” is a way to expresses individuality, challenging the traditional rules at work and conventional aesthetics – including beauty and ugliness – through attire choice.
