2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the restoration of China’s legitimate rights at the United Nations. In 1971, China returned to the UN, upholding the slogan “A country wants independence, a nation wants liberation, and the people want revolution.” Over the past five decades, China has become a beneficiary and champion of interna- tional order with the UN at the core. China has acted in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and constructed an image of a responsible country widely recognized for its contribu- tions. In a speech to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the restora- tion of its lawful seat at the UN in late October, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a path of peaceful development, reform and opening-up, and multilateralism. It is high time for countries to put aside pride and prejudice, ignorance and intransigent attitudes in favor of long-term consideration to tackle global issues together.
