Ambassador Qin Turns a New Page

Yawei Liu, director of the Carter Center’s China program, on the prospects of US-China relations

By Xie Yi Updated Sept.2

Against the backdrop of tensions between China and the US, Qing Gang, China's new ambassador to the US, continues his friendly gestures, including his recent birthday wishes to Little Miracle, a panda cub at the National Zoo in Washington, DC.

Qin praised Little Miracle as "a splash of color to the exchanges between Chinese and American people."

Pandas have long been called “goodwill ambassadors.” Could Qin's conciliatory message be a sign that Beijing is seeking to turn a new page with Washington?

In his interview with NewsChina, Yawei Liu, director of the Carter Center’s China program, shares his insights into the ongoing tensions between the US and China and opportunities for governmental and grassroots cooperation to improve bilateral relations.
