The River Rolls On

Pianist Yin Chengzong on the seminal Yellow River Piano Concerto, his role in reintroducing China to the piano, and his personal journey as a musician

By Xie Yi Updated May.24

For older music fans in China, Yin Chengzong is a household name. In the 1960s, piano was regarded as an instrument of the bourgeoisie and was forbidden in China. Yin played an important role in helping to save it from destruction with his adaptations of Chinese traditional music, accompanying Peking opera such as The Legend of the Red Lantern and collaborating on the Yellow River Piano Concerto with fellow composers. Now living in New York, Yin still plays stages around the world. Sitting down with NewsChina, Yin shares stories from his life and this beloved concerto.
