China Must Strive to Shape Emerging Perceptions in US

Now is a precious window of opportunity to influence US perceptions of China beyond “strategic rival,” argues an international relations scholar

The US is still coming to a consensus on how to deal with China, a process that China must proactively shape and influence, Diao Daming, associate professor at School of International Relations, Renmin University of China said in an interview with Shanghai-based news portal The Paper

China should work to improve these emerging perceptions by expressing hope about advancing the steady development of China-US ties, Diao said. More importantly, China must clearly communicate what it wants and its core strategic interests to the US and the world.

This means China needs to be forceful in its responses to the US over trade and other possible issues, Diao argued. Facing a potential slide in China-US ties, China must clarify that any high-handedness from the US side will not work.

The two countries are not what they were 40 years ago. While the US’s China policies should change, that doesn’t mean they must take a turn for the worse, Diao argued. Pressuring China will not help the US solve any issues at home, he added.

China experts in the US, mainly in their 30s and 40s, consider the country more from a perspective of American interests rather than welcome its development as their predecessors, Diao noted.

More interaction and exchange is key to easing their wariness about China. As they grow in experience and China takes a more positive approach toward the relationship, their stances are likely to undergo fundamental changes.
