US Policy Toward China Not Just a Diplomatic Issue

One must take account of the domestic situation in a country to fully understand its foreign policies, says international relations expert

By Zhang Qingchen Updated Nov.15

To analyze foreign policies needs consideration of a country’s domestic policies, and the US's foreign policies toward China are an example, Wang Jisi, a professor at the School of International Studies, Peking University, told the news portal Reference News.
A reasonable way to understand Sino-US relations will stem from an analysis of both China's and the US’s domestic politics, said Wang. This is why analyzing US foreign policies on China should be in accordance with internal and external situations.

Wang said that Americans are feeling a general sense of insecurity, which results from a downturn in the economy. The US is facing imbalanced regional development, and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening; complaints about globalization are growing as well.

In terms of domestic politics, the US has to deal with ethnic conflicts and bipartisan polarization. An example is the recent shooting rampage inside a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The shooting in Pittsburgh reflects the divisions in belief and social identity.
