Innovation Needed in Generic Drug Sector: Doctor

China's generic drugs sector is booming but more innovation is needed, a doctor says.

China's generic drugs sector needs to innovate and achieve a greater level of safety and efficacy, writes Chen Zuobing, a medical doctor and head of Zhejiang University's center for rehabilitation research, for the Guangming Daily

After explaining that generic drugs are lower-cost versions of name brand drugs which can be produced after drug patents expire, Chen says the sector is booming in China because of the size of the market and its lack of sophistication in developing patented drugs.

The Chinese government has made efforts to build quality into the system, Chen says. In March 2016, the State Council issued an opinion that established new generics must match the quality and efficacy of the patented drugs they mimic.
