Green Logistics is the Future for the Sector

China's huge logistics industry will not be able to develop unless it embraces new sustainable models

China’s new standards on express-delivery packing materials show Chinese people have realized the significance of green logistics, experts said.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration of China recently issued a newly revised national standard for packing materials to be used in the express delivery industry. The new national standard will officially be implemented from September 1, 2018, according to the Beijing News.

Green logistics refers to environmental express-delivery transportation and packages, said Pan Helin, a commentator for newspaper the Guangming Daily.

Indeed, with its rapid development in recent years, the logistics industry has caused severe problems with plastic waste or other non-degradable packing materials, Pan said.

While green logistics is an ideal, it is not easy to completely achieve. China's logistics industry has some shortcomings, such as poor warehouse layout. Pan suggested improving efficiency in the industry is as vital as reducing waste. The sector should strengthen its facilities, optimize the holistic layout and promote interaction among different logistics segments. In addition to the enterprises’ endeavors, support from the government and policies to back this up are essential.
