New Uses for Chinese Ink

Award-winning artist gives her contemporary art works an inky touch

By Xie Yi Updated Jul.27

Emmy Award-winning visual artist Jennifer Wen Ma developed her interest in integrating Chinese ink into contemporary artworks while working as the chief designer for visual and special effects for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Since then, she has been developing her approach to combining traditional Chinese ink with modern technology across varied media such as installations, video, public art, design, performance and theatre, often bringing together unlikely elements in a single piece to create sensitive, poetic and poignant works.

Her latest exhibition, "Eight Views of Paradise Interrupted,” features paintings and installations inspired by her widely-recognized contemporary opera, Paradise Interrupted, and is on show at the Sandra Gering Inc. Gallery, New York City.
