At the invitation of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister, paid an official visit to Canada from May 28 to 30, marking the first trip by a Chinese foreign minister to Canada in a decade.
Wang's trip to Canada comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to China in January, during which the two countries reached consensus on the China-Canada new Strategic Partnership, a signal of a warming relationship between the two countries.
During the visit, Wang met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand. Wang told them that there are no clashes of fundamental interests between the two nations and there is enormous room for cooperation in areas like energy, finance and law enforcement based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.
Carney told Wang that Canada is willing to work with China to maintain close high-level exchanges, deepen cooperation in fields such as energy, finance, agriculture and fisheries, and keep consolidating the foundation of bilateral relations.
Anand said Canada looks forward to achieving a 50 percent increase in exports to China by 2030 and that Canada is ready to strengthen high-level exchanges with China, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and enhance coordination on multilateral affairs.
The two sides also agreed to set up a China-Canada foreign ministers' strategic dialogue mechanism and resume multiple high-level consultation channels.
