China's Self- developed Langya Ocean Model 2.0 Launched in Qingdao

The Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IO- CAS) launched the Langya Ocean Model 2.0 in Qingdao, East China's Shandong Province, on June 6. 

Upgraded from the initial Langya Ocean Model 1.0 released in 2024, the 2.0 version features an AI-driven intelligent global ocean forecasting system that integrates multi-source marine observation data and advanced intelligent algorithms to deliver precise and efficient oceanic predictions. The upgraded model expands its forecasting coverage from basic ocean parameter monitoring to six categories of complex global marine phenomena, including typhoons, precipitation, storm surges, sea ice, internal solitary waves (big sub-surface waves) and mesoscale eddies, which are loops of swirling water. 

According to experts, the launch of Langya Ocean Model 2.0 marks a new stage of intelligent, refined marine forecasting in China. Empowered by cutting-edge AI technologies, the model will strongly support marine disaster prevention and mitigation, maritime navigation safety assurance, polar route guarantee and the high-quality development of the global marine economy.
