Studying overseas in English-speaking countries, particularly the US, has become increasingly difficult for Chinese students due to geopolitical complexities. However, to broaden their horizons, many youngsters long to study abroad, but with a greater variety of choices. Nowadays, European countries such as Germany, Ireland, Italy and Sweden as well as some Asian countries, like Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, are becoming popular destinations for Chinese students. Meanwhile, top universities in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have been inundated by applicants from the Chinese mainland. But despite Hong Kong’s efforts to retain those graduates to expand its talent pool, many still choose to return to the mainland. While an overseas diploma is not a passport to a well-paid job like before, students with multi-cultural educational backgrounds still find a welcome in Chinese companies eyeing overseas expansion.
