Solid-State Batteries Redefine Energy Industrial Chain

Weekly On Stocks November 30, 2024

By NewsChina Updated Feb.1

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) with potentially safe and stable high-energy capacity and long life cycles are set to replace liquid lithium batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) and flying cars. Not only do solid electrolytes give SSBs higher power capacity, they are also incombustible and durable, especially at low temperatures. Research into SSBs can be divided into three different directions – polymers, oxides and sulfides, with the last essential to the production of all-solid-state-batteries. Mass production of SSBs in China is expected to start in 2027 when sulfides will become the main material. The industry scale is expected to reach 180 billion yuan (US$25b) in 2030. Top brands such as Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and BYD are involved in the race for commercial SSBs. Experts suggest the industry cut costs in time to catch up with tech improvements.
