The thoughts, attitudes, stances and emotions created between lines of literary works should accentuate social fairness, freedom, friendliness and love, and inspire self-examination, Chinese writer Liang Xiaosheng said recently. At 75, the prolific writer, known for his realistic works such as A Lifelong Journey, whose TV adaptation was a hit in 2022, favors exploring principled ordinary people who resist temptation. According to Liang, the style of A Lifelong Journey mirrors Leo Tolstoy’s sincerity and Ivan Turgenev’s sympathy. Compared to Fyodor Dostoyevsky, whose hardship resulted in his keen observation of human nature, Liang appreciates Tolstoy’s multiple storytelling styles more. Liang believes that contemporary Chinese literature is both distinctive and outstanding, and writers should be confident in their roles in the world of literature.
