General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and State President To Lam visited China from August 18 to 20.

This was To Lam’s first state visit since he took office as CPV General Secretary after his predecessor Nguyen Phu Trong died on July 19.

To Lam landed in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, where he visited sites connected with CPV founder Ho Chi Minh’s revolutionary activities in China in the 1920s.

Lam told media that Vietnam’s revolutionary history is closely linked with that of China and that his Party and country have always considered the development of relations with China as the top priority in their foreign policy, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, met with Lam in Beijing on August 19. According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry readout, President Xi told Lam that as the two ruling communist parties in today’s world, the Communist Party of China and the CPV should continue their traditional friendship, continue to deepen the building of a China-Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance, and jointly promote the development of the cause of socialism in the world.

Xi said that China regards Vietnam as a priority in its neighborhood diplomacy and that China is ready to maintain close strategic communication and high-level exchanges with Vietnam to explore ways to expand cooperation.

After the talks, the two sides witnessed the signing of multiple bilateral cooperation documents.
