China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken when he attended the ASEAN Plus Foreign Ministers’ Meetings in Vientiane on July 27.
Wang told Blinken that although China and the US have increased communications in an array of fields like finance and climate change over past three months, the US has not stopped, but rather doubled down on its containment and suppression of China, causing growing risks and challenges to bilateral relations.
Wang stressed that China’s US policy always adheres to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, while the US always views China in its own hegemonic mindset.
“China does not pursue hegemony, or practice power politics. China has the best record on peace and security among all major countries,” Wang said, urging the US to return to a rational and pragmatic China policy.
Wang also reaffirmed China’s stance on the Taiwan question and the South China Sea issue.
At the ASEAN Plus Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, Wang emphasized that China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea will not be affected by the illegitimate ruling by the ad hoc arbitral tribunal.
