The Paris Olympics has given a boost to China’s cross-border e-commerce platforms including Temu and Shein. Exports of sports products from Yiwu, known for its dynamic private economy, grew by 46.2 percent year-on-year in the first quarter to 2.2 billion yuan (US$140m), among which 230 million yuan (US$31.81m) was to the European Union. Aware of the stringent patent regulations in Europe, young Chinese entrepreneurs are focusing more on innovation. Some new products come in response to newer Olympic sports like skateboarding, introduced to attract younger audiences to the Games. Meanwhile, despite a tight training window since the postponed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, many experienced Chinese athletes still participated in Paris. Regardless of strikes and security alarms before the Games, the Paris Olympics can serve as a euphoric interval amid regional geopolitical tensions.
