China’s first hydrogen-powered train accomplished a full-load trial run in Changchun, Jilin Province on March 21, marking a new breakthrough in the use of hydrogen power in rail transportation.

Developed by CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles (CRVC), the train is equipped with a built-in hydrogen power system and a domestically developed hydrogen-electricity energy control system. In the test run, the train ran at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour with an average per-hour energy consumption of 5 kilowatt-hours. The train is designed for a maximum range of more than 1,000 kilometers.

According to CRVC, the trial tested the train’s performance at temperatures between -25 and 35 Celsius, which it passed successfully.

Hydrogen is a zero-emissions form of energy, only emitting water vapor.

The China Hydrogen Alliance predicted in a 2020 report that China’s hydrogen energy industry would be valued at 1 trillion yuan (US$138.3b) by 2025, with the consumption of hydrogen energy exceeding 10 percent of the country’s total by 2050.
