Four more Chinese villages – Huangling Village, Jiangxi Province, Xiajiang Village, Zhejiang Province, Zhagana Village, Gansu Province and Zhujiawan Village, Shaanxi Province – were announced as among the most attractive tourist destinations at the global conference of World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on November 19, 2023. This brings the total count of such villages in China to eight, tying with Peru and Spain. The UNWTO anticipates that this selection will play a crucial role in preserving natural indigenous landscapes, cultures, customs and cuisines. The criteria for selection encompass local natural resources, cultural legacies, security, healthcare, welfare and public facilities. In China, the allure of an idyllic life in these villages has become a magnet for innovative young people seeking a place to settle down.
