The first Data of the GuangdongHong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) Conference was held on July 12 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. Online data indicates the GBA has become a world-leading bay area following the top three: the San Francisco Bay Area, New York Metropolitan Area and Tokyo Bay Area.

The report published at the conference by the Ocean Engine City Institute under online short-video platform Douyin (TikTok) revealed the GBA is economically supported by technological and financial services, and hosts 25 Fortune Global 500 enterprises, higher than that of New York Metropolitan Area and San Francisco Bay Area.

The institute designed an online prosperity index called SIRFA to measure a region’s level of transmission, influence, number of recommendations and attraction. Based on this index, the GBA ranked first among 19 big Chinese city clusters.

By tracking user activity on Douyin, the institute found that users in the GBA posted 100 million startup-related topics and “liked” finance-related topics 40.38 million times between January 2021 and March 2022. In the same period, GBA users placed more than 700 million orders, with Shenzhen’s consumption ranked first in the bay area.

The institute said at the conference it will regularly publish data on the GBA for investors, experts and businesses to give full play to the GBA’s potentials.
