A disturbing case involving a mother and her boyfriend accused of physically torturing her 6-year-old daughter has drawn nationwide outrage. Reports and photos allege the mother and her boyfriend, surnamed Liu and Chen, of Fushun, Liaoning Province, burned her daughter’s lips with a lighter and pulled out her teeth with pliers, among other heinous acts. Police were alerted when the child’s grandmother discovered the injuries. A medical exam revealed more than 10 fractures and other wounds. The victim’s father told media he had sent his daughter to live with his ex-wife Liu for work reasons in January. Liu and Chen were arrested in September on charges of abuse and intentional injury. Netizens have since appealed for a separate child abuse law that imposes heavier penalties.
