Statistics from the Chinese National Cancer Registry showed that more than 300,000 breast cancer cases were diagnosed in the country in 2019, and the patient profile is getting younger. Four out of 10,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 70,000 women die every year. Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of malignant cancer among women in China, and getting patients back to normal life after surgery has become increasingly important. According to Dr Liao Ning, a specialist at Guangdong People’s Hospital, post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is the most-widely used method for patients who have had cancer surgery. Liao conducts around 1,550 reconstructive surgeries for women every year, but apart from surgery, it is crucial to heal patients’ psychological trauma and help them live with dignity, she said.
