A new hire at a Beijing branch of Xiamen International Bank accused his superior of slapping him for turning down a toast from the branch president at a company dinner. According to a widely circulated text screenshot attributed to the employee, a man surnamed Yang, a senior manager physically and verbally attacked him before other employees harassed him when he tried to leave. Yang also said he notified the branch president of his refusal to drink liquor for personal reasons. Social media users lambasted the bank and criticized the culture of forced drinking during business events. The bank has issued an apology, saying it has docked the salaries of Yang’s superior and the branch president over the incident.
