Reconnecting Routes

Caixin Weekly June 15, 2020

By NewsChina Updated Sept.1

On June 2, 21 Chinese students who had been studying in the US and UK were stranded at Zurich Airport in Switzerland for 48 hours. Four days later, six of them arrived back in China and entered mandatory quarantine. The other 15 were sent back to the US. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the massive closure of flight routes, it is difficult for Chinese students, particularly those studying in the US, to return to China. On June 15, the US Department of Transportation permitted Chinese carriers to operate four weekly round-trip passenger services between China and the US. Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Administration of China also allowed two US airline companies to resume four round-trip flights per week between the two countries. Experts cautioned that it is a good start but against the backdrop of the pandemic trend in the US and China’s continuous stringent anti-epidemic measures, it is unlikely the two countries will resume normal flight schedules in the near future.
