According to China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology Miao Wei, China had built more than 130,000 5G base stations nationwide by the end of 2019.

Miao revealed the information at a press conference on the 2019 development of industry and information technology, where he said his ministry has approved 35 types of mobile phones to access the 5G network. Domestic sales of 5G-enabled smartphones have surpassed 17 million.
After the International Telecommunication Union defined the standard for R16, a 5G standard for mMMC (massive machine type of communication), China will, according to Miao, focus on building independent 5G networks to give full play to its advantages.

This includes the Internet of Things and the industrial internet. Miao said if industrial enterprises install an internal 5G network, it will promote the enterprise’s digitalization and smart working as well as extend 5G applications.

Miao also talked about the safety of 5G networks, saying that use of Chinese products would not threaten any country’s security and that China opposes politicizing 5G technology.
