The mobile internet has fundamentally changed the landscape of the charity sector. Online fundraising has become an increasingly important channel in China, providing new platforms for fundraising institutions. Official statistics show that 20 designated online charitable fundraising platforms released 21,000 fundraisers and solicited 3.17 billion yuan (US$453m) for more than 1,400 charitable organizations in 2018. At the same time, fraud in online fundraising has been prevalent, although China’s Charity Law prohibits any individuals or institutions without credentials from publicly soliciting donations. It is high time to improve the management of online fundraising and tighten supervision in order to create a proper philanthropic sector.
