A teacher was fired from a northwest China junior high school for verbally abusing a student after the victim secretly captured one of his humiliating tirades on video. The teacher surnamed Wang of Shangluo, Shaanxi Province, is accused of repeatedly shaming the female student in front of her class over a six month period. The victim said at one point that Wang had forbidden other students from befriending her. Wang, however, argued that he was trying to motivate the girl because of her poor academic performance. Netizens pounced on Wang’s claims as an excuse, saying that Chinese schools often overlook ethics training while placing too much importance on teacher evaluations. Facing online criticism, local education authorities also punished the school’s head for turning a blind eye to Wang’s misconduct.
