A private rehabilitation center in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, has come under fire after a three-year-old boy with autism died there after being forced to speed-walk a total distance of 19 kilometers in one day as part of a military-style exercise regimen imposed by facility staff.

The boy’s doctor said that he was suffering from pulmonary hemorrhage, viral meningitis and severe hand, foot and mouth disease at the time of his death. According to media reports, the center was registered as a “health consultancy,” but had advertised a treatment program that could help “redevelop” children with autism. Netizens condemned the authorities for failing to verify the qualifications of such facilities before allowing them to operate.
