List of Atmospheric Pollutants Will Help Pinpoint Sources, Control Risks

Enterprises which produce pollutants on the list will have to take responsibility for dealing with potential toxins and other harmful waste products

By Zhang Qingchen Updated Jan.22

The first list of atmospheric pollutants China has published will both help the nation in its fight against pollution and help identify the sources of these pollutants, the Beijing Youth Daily commented.

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) has published its first list, which includes major sources of air pollution, including methylene chloride and formaldehyde. This means the government will be able to improve its systems for warnings of air pollution and decisions to deal with it, and the list will undoubtedly help improve the economic and social benefits of environmental governance.

Organizations and enterprises that produce toxic and harmful atmospheric pollutants that are on the list will be expected to control sources of pollution and conduct risk assessments. They will be expected to improve technologies and innovation, strengthen environmental risk control, check and eliminate potential environmental safety hazards and regularly monitor discharge outlets.

Since pollution is also a public health matter, the public should be given the right to know and the right to supervise, so as to realize real-time oversight of these polluting industries.

According to data from the MEE, and the density of PM 2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microns) was lowered by 9.3 percent in 2018 compared with that in 2017.
