Pictures and videos of some farmers in Guangxi stomping on their lychees have gone viral. According to the posters, there was a bountiful lychee harvest this year and due to the oversupply, the price dropped to below one yuan (US$0.15) per kilogram. Many farmers preferred to destroy their harvest rather than accept such a low price. Netizens sympathized with the farmers, with many questioning why urban residents still have to pay tenfold or even 20 times the price for lychees. They believe that the high cost of transportation and too many middlemen between producers and customers are to blame.
