Expert: Why Dongguan Still Has Manufacturing Edge

Developing Dongguan's manufacturing sector would benefit the overall development of China's Greater Bay Area

By Zhang Qingchen Updated Aug.14

Dongguan, in South China's Guangdong Province, will play a key role in the first steps of development for the planned Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. Bay areas have been found to drive economies worldwide and Dongguan's location in the Pearl River Delta gives it a geographical advantage and better foundations to further innovate in modern manufacturing, said Wei Jianguo, vice-president of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, reported by the Global Times.

Adjacent to Hong Kong, Dongguan can make the most of Hong Kong's resources in the way of research institutions, education, and technology to transfer local traditional industry to industrial design, customized services, cultural creativity and other high-end and innovative projects.

According to the report, supply-side reform, namely reducing production costs and improving labor productivity, is the next step for Dongguan’s manufacturing upgrade. Dongguan will have to give full consideration to attracting talent. To build an international and free trading environment, the protection on intellectual property is also necessary, Wei added.
