The top 10 Chinese provincial regions in annual GDP in 2024 contributed over 60 percent of the country’s total GDP, 134.91 trillion yuan (US$19.3t), according to government data.

They are Shanghai and provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shangdong in the east, Sichuan Province in the southwest, Hunan, Guangdong and Fujian provinces in the south, as well as Henan and Hubei provinces.

The 10 regions each recorded GDP of over 5 trillion yuan (US$714.3b) in 2024, with Guangdong ranked top for 36 years in a row, and Shanghai becoming the first city to register annual GDP of over 5 trillion yuan (US$714.3b).

As for GDP growth, seven regions exceeded the country’s average growth of 5 percent, with Jiangsu and Hubei ranking first among the 10 with 5.8 percent.

Analysts said the success of these regions is due to the solid manufacturing sector and the fast development of the tertiary sector. Meanwhile, analysts noted that all 10 regions performed well in encouraging advanced and innovative technologies. For example, industries involved in Zhejiang’s core digital sector saw their industrial value-added rise by 8 percent year-on-year, and both Shanghai and Zhejiang’s investment intensity (invested fixed assets against the total area of a project) of innovative technologies is higher than the country’s average.
