China’s first domestically designed and manufactured passenger aircraft, the C919, is flying a new regular commercial route from Shanghai to Hong Kong as of January 1, 2025.
The new flight numbered MU721/ MU722 is operated by China Eastern Airlines and flies one round trip every day. The first flight carried 157 passengers.
Commercial flights operated by the C919 started on May 28, 2023, flying from Shanghai to Beijing. According to COMAC, the C919’s developer, the company has already delivered 14 C919 planes to domestic airlines, nine to China Eastern, and the others to Air China and China Southern. All are in commercial operation across 15 routes.
Chinese media reported that the C909, a regional aircraft also developed by COMAC, completed a test flight for a domestically made braking system in Chongqing on the same day. COMAC revealed that it is already designing a larger passenger aircraft, the C929, with other models including the C939 and another new-generation smart plane in initial research and development phases.
