A high-achieving high school student in Zhejiang Province has sparked controversy by opting for a vocational school over prestigious universities.

Chen Yuxuan, a liberal arts-tracked student who scored 602 out of 750 on the national college entrance exam – above the admissions score to prestigious schools such as the Communication University of Zhejiang and Ningbo University – decided to pursue a degree in rail traffic facility management and control at Zhejiang Technical Vocational School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, whose course boasts a 98 percent employment rate.

Her decision came just days before the vocational school was upgraded to university status on July 3. Chen’s practical choice reflects the challenging job market faced by many university graduates, particularly those in non-STEM fields.

On social media platform Sina Weibo, Hangzhou TV Station’s July 21 report on Chen has garnered over 1,500 comments. Some users caution that her career prospects may not be as bright as she hopes, given the school’s technical focus.
