At least 48 people died after a section of the Meizhou-Dabu Highway in Guangdong Province collapsed, with another three suspected victims undergoing DNA tests for identification.
The tragic accident happened at around 2:10 am on May 1, the first day of China’s Labor Day holidays (May 1-5), when the road collapsed and slid down a mountain slope after days of heavy rain, swallowing 23 vehicles.
Many of the vehicles were severely damaged, and some burst into flames, making it difficult to identify some of the victims.
Authorities are still investigating the incident. Experts said it was most likely due to the extreme weather the area had experienced in the preceding days. Constant precipitation may have increased soil saturation and caused instability. Some other experts also questioned the construction and maintenance standards of the road.
