The government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) announced on August 7 that after negotiations with the government of Macao Special Administrative Region, trucks would be able to transfer between the two SARs via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge from August 8.

Opened in 2018, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge starts from Hong Kong port near Hong Kong International Airport and goes west to Macao and Zhuhai in Guangdong Province. Trucks from Hong Kong can pick up and drop goods at the transfer stop in Macao. Trucks from Macao can deliver goods to and from the logistics hub at Hong Kong International Airport.

Hong Kong transport authorities said trucks will be exempt from commercial tax registration and Macao road tax, and drivers do not require a Macao driving license. The number of trucks is capped at 400 per day.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the arrangement will greatly facilitate cargo transportation that previously depended on marine routes, and it will help increase trade and exchanges between the two SARs.
