Track laying has commenced on a new section of high-speed railway to the Vietnamese border, which will form an important part of a future high-speed rail link to China’s southern neighbor.

Workers from China Railway Nanning Group started laying tracks for the 46.9-kilometer Fangchenggang-Dongxing Railway on August 8. The railway connects Fangchenggang and Dongxing in Southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The line will connect to a planned railway in Vietnam from Hanoi to Mong Cai, just over the border from Dongxing. It is of great significance, Nanning Group said, to connect Guangxi’s northern economic zones and even the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong to ASEAN countries to facilitate bilateral trade.

The line, which will form the westernmost point of China’s southern coastal line, will have a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour, and will reduce travel time to 20 minutes between the two cities. The tracklaying is scheduled for completion by the end of September and the line will go into use by the end of this year.
