A prominent lawyer and oil company executive has resigned amid allegations he had repeatedly raped his teenage foster daughter and held her captive in his home. Bao Yuming, vice president of Jereh Group and former adviser to telecom giant ZTE, stepped down after police in Yantai, Shandong Province announced they would reopen the investigation. According to Xingxing (pseudonym), now 18, Bao had informally adopted her in 2015 from her single mother, and claims he began his sexual abuse in 2016 soon after she turned 14 years old. In her police report, Xingxing described years of living under constant video surveillance in Bao’s home, where he forced her to watch child pornography, pose naked for photos and have sex. Li had turned twice to Yantai police for help, only to be turned away for lack of evidence. Bao has publicly denied the accusations of rape and claimed that he and Xingxing were lovers. But netizens suspected that Bao had used his legal expertise to exploit Chinese law, since the minimum age for consensual sex is 14 years old. The Ministry of Public Security and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate have sent teams to supervise the investigation and legal proceedings.
