A high school in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, has triggered heated online discussion after it initiated a “score bank” which allows the students to “borrow marks” if they fail an exam. For example, if a student gets 59 marks and 60 is the pass boundary, he could borrow a point from the “bank” and pay it back in the following exam, along with pre-defined “score interest.” The school claimed that the scheme is intended to lighten students’ burden by giving them more chances to pass exams, which helps their mental health. Most netizens have been highly supportive of the innovation, though some have argued that it cannot radically change the fact that students’ lives are still controlled by their grades.
