A new freight air route between Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Bournemouth in southern UK went into operation on August 19.
The first flight, which lasted 10 hours, delivered around 58.4 tons of exports, mostly clothes and shoes. There are four planned flights a week.
According to Wan Xiang, executive director and general manager of Xinjiang Business Logistics Aviation Development, it is the company’s third international cargo route after Tbilisi, Georgia and Budapest, Hungary. The new route adds around 30,000 tons of transportation capacity annually.
After the construction of the Xinjiang Pilot Free Trade Zone established in late 2023, import and export transportation at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport is seeing steady growth.
Customs data shows that in the first half of 2024, total cargo transportation at the airport hit 7,515 tons, 216.1 percent more than in the same period of 2023.
