China is home to 42 items on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage and 1,557 national intangible cultural heritage items approved by the State Council. Much of the country’s intangible cultural heritage such as shadow puppetry, brocade-making and lion dancing was saved from the brink of extinction thanks to preservation efforts. China has released a package of support policies to protect intangible cultural heritage which includes the establishment of museums and allocation of special funds. To date, over 90,000 people have been acknowledged as heritage inheritors, including 3,060 for national heritage, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Intangible cultural heritage protection will get a further boost from the country’s ambitious aim of rural revitalization.
