A court in Shenzhen is hearing a case about a 31-year-old woman who lost her mental capacity after a botched cosmetic surgery. Xiao Li (pseudonym) was undergoing eyelid surgery and a nose job at a local cosmetic center in May 2020 when she went into sudden cardiac arrest due to anesthesia complications and fell into a coma, court records show. Although the center gave Xiao Li first aid and sent her to hospital, she remained unconscious for 16 days. Ever since, Xiao Li has regular fits of screaming and does not recognize her parents. She has lost the ability to care for herself, said her doctor, who added she now has the mental capacity of an infant. The cosmetic center faces 20,000 yuan (US$3,050) in fines and a one-month closure while the doctor is fined 5,000 yuan (US$763) with a six-month suspension from practicing. However, the harm to Xiao Li seems irreversible. Netizens have called for tighter supervision of private cosmetic centers, especially regarding their qualifications.
