y February 10, 40.52 million Covid-19 vaccines were given to Chinese people (each complete vaccination includes two injections at an interval of 2-4 weeks), according to China’s National Health Commission (NHC). NHC official Wang Bin said at a press conference on January 20 that China is launching vaccinations nationwide, with key populations and regions such as port cities prioritized. China currently uses the inactivated vaccine developed by China Biology (CNBG) under China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm). Feng Zijian, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said at the same press conference that their observations showed that this vaccine can produce neutralizing antibodies in 97 percent of vaccinated populations.
For now, China is not vaccinating people over 60, minors or those with diseases such as cancer or severe high blood pressure. Wang said his department will gradually address vaccinations for children and seniors.
Zhang Yutao, CNBG’s deputy president, said that his company’s worldwide trials proved their vaccine’s wide spectrum and they are now conducting trials targeting the mutated virus discovered in South Africa and the UK.
