China’s No.5 nuclear power unit in Fuqing, Fujian Province, built by State-owned China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), was connected to the grid on November 27.

Using China’s Hualong One Technology, a third-generation pressurized water reactor technology, which Chinese nuclear power giants, CNNC and China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) independently developed, the No.5 Fuqing unit means that China has broken the foreign monopoly on nuclear power technologies.

The unit is expected to generate 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year and has a service life of 60 years, which will greatly help China reduce coal consumption and carbon emissions.

According to Chinese media reports, Hualong One has been certified by the European Utility Requirement (EUR) Committee, meaning it will be allowed to enter the European market. CNNC said there are six Hualong One reactors under construction worldwide.
