In recent years, there have been a growing number of crimes in the agriculture sector involving fake seeds. In March 2019, prosecutors in China launched a national campaign targeting fake goods to better protect the interests of the country’s vast number of farmers. According to statistics from the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), 208 people who had produced or sold fake pesticides, veterinary drugs, chemical fertilizers and seeds were prosecuted from January 2018 to December 2019. In March, the SPP made public a case in which more than 200 rural households in the city of Yichun, Jiangxi Province, suffered total crop failure after using fake seeds, incurring combined economic losses of 4.6 million yuan (US$673,440). Prosecutors said that it is difficult to eradicate fake seeds because of the lack of receipts and it is hard to identify the causal relationship between crop failure and fake seeds.
